Appeal summary
Do you recognise this man? He’s wanted by HM Revenue and Customs in connection to a £170 million VAT scam known as Missing Trader fraud.
He’s believed to be part of a gang which use false identities to set up a series of companies which trade in mobile phones throughout Europe. The companies claim to have bought and sold millions of pounds worth of mobile phones. However, it is thought these phones do not exist and are instead a front allowing the reclaim of VAT amounts that were never paid in the first place.
He uses the names Najeeb Mohammed and Sumair Ghazanfar, is in his late 20s to mid 30s and has connections to Slough, Berkshire and Oxford.
What is Missing Trader Fraud?
Missing Trader Fraud is when criminals claim to import goods free of VAT from another VAT registered company in the European Union. They then charge VAT when they sell the goods on, but instead of handing over the tax, disappear. The losses are multiplied if the goods are then re-exported, allowing the exporting trader to reclaim VAT he has been charged, costing the government millions of pounds.
